The latest challenge: choosing the right screen resolution for your web site. A multiple-media.com Barometer report.
Montreal-based web agency multiple-media.com has just completed a study of screen resolutions used by Quebec web surfers. The main finding: the situation has become much more complicated, creating major headaches for companies.
Among all the possible screen resolution choices, which one should companies choose for their web site? To answer this question, the multiple-media.com Barometer team conducted a detailed analysis of more than 5 million visits to Quebec and Canadian sites, including a wide range of institutional, financial, entertainment and professional sites. An analysis of the results yielded several conclusions, notably:
- Ten screen resolutions account for roughly 50% of all web traffic
- Screen resolutions that are 1024 pixels wide, or less, are in steady decline
- Screen resolutions of 1280 pixels wide or more dominate the web landscape
- Mobile phone resolutions represent less than 2% of all visits
- More than 1,500 different screen resolutions are used within Canada alone
"When planning a web development project or site upgrade, companies must take several factors into consideration, including the needs of the site’s primary target audience, the site’s projected life span, versions required for various platforms, and so on. These are essential factors in selecting the right screen resolution" explained Jean-Philippe Bédard, Web Solutions director at Multiple-Media.com and author of the Multiple-Media.com Barometer report.
The latest edition of the multiple-media.com Barometer offers marketing and IT departments a thorough overview of screen resolution-related issues and opportunities for consideration in their web development or upgrade projects.
